"Sanremo in Fiore" from 1980 to 2020

After the long interruption that took place from 1967 to 1979, there was the welcome and awaited return, starting in 1980, of the flower floats that everyone remembered with nostalgia.
The main creator of their restoration was Dr. Carlo Poletti, president of the Autonomous Tourist Board of the time, and the name "Sanremo in Fiore" was adopted, also to differentiate it from the "Corso Fiorito" period. Only on the occasion of the 2012 edition the subtitle "Festa della Dea Flora" was adopted to recall the ancient name of the event.

The chosen formula saw the involvement of the other municipalities of the Riviera di Ponente, who were invited to take part in the event by being represented by a flowery wagon.
The initiative was very well received and interested by the various towns, from Ventimiglia to Alassio, sometimes with an association between neighbouring towns, in order to face the event in the best way possible by pooling physical and economic resources, such as, for example, "Il Golfo Dianese" which includes several neighbouring towns of Diano Marina.

Sanremo in Fiore was not held in 1985, due to a sudden and exceptional snowfall, both for the great difficulties in the supply of flowers and out of respect for the floriculture operators, who were hard hit by the atmospheric event.

Initially the classic ring-route was used, which included Via Roma and Via Nino Bixio, while later, also to limit the serious road problems, the promenade named after Italo Calvino was chosen and part of the new cycle path built on the former railway road. The proximity to the sea also offered a more suitable scenario for a city dedicated to seaside tourism.

The time of the parade was also changed: from the initial hours of 2.00 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. to the current 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., with the advantage of better light and sunshine, in addition to the longer time available for travel and the return of the numerous spectators, on average 50-60,000, coming from the most distant locations.
This has allowed RAI to include footage of the event in the Linea Verde programme and also to broadcast reports on floriculture in our area. In this regard, Sanremo in Fiore holds the absolute audience record in the Sunday morning segment, with about 5 million viewers for the 28.01.2007 edition, against an average of about 3.5 million. Unfortunately, television coverage is not always adequate for the importance of the event.

More recently, and precisely since 2011, the programming period of the event has also changed. Whereas previously it was normally scheduled towards the end of January, as a promotional vehicle for the Song Festival, it has now been moved to the beginning of March, in order to be able to count on even better weather conditions and extend the range of time covered by the two most important events of the year.

Each year a specific theme is chosen to inspire the subjects of the participating floats, while a special jury assigns a prize to the Municipality that presented the best float of the parade, traditionally opened by the one in Sanremo, out of competition.
