The origins of the City

The "Bauma" of San RomoloThe first building used as a church was built in front of the cave, "la Bauma", which according to tradition was the last place where the Holy Bishop Romulus lived. The Church of San RomoloAround the beginning of the 16th century the Franciscan friars, who had settled in the city in 1468, thought it would be useful to open a second convent, right where the parish church and the adjoining building now stand. From that primordial nucleus, along the centuries, in alternating phases, until today, it has always remained a working and officiated chapel.

The Church around 1920In 1885, the church with the adjoining building needed radical restoration work, works that began in 1891 and were completed in a short period of time.

L'abside cella ChiesaIn the bauma is still preserved a marble statue representing the transit of St. Romulus, a work donated in 1722 by the abbot Agostino Borea, the same prelate who donated the four twisted alabaster columns of the altar major of Madonna della Costa.

The parish was built in 1951, the first parish priest was Mons. Giovanni Tornatore. The locality of S. Romolo has always welcomed the people of Sanremo for short periods of rest.
