Munich and Painter

Oratorio della Concezione di SanremoTeresio Maria Languasco, (born Tomaso Lodovico) was born in Sanremo on 25th May 1651 to Filippo and Anna Maria.

After finishing his early studies in San Remo he went to Genoa to complete his training, but in the capital he was attracted by painting and became a pupil of Giovanni Bernardo Carbone, a Baroque painter with Venetian influences who was very active and in demand in Genoa between 1650 and 1675.

Languasco was a prolific painter, whose works include a Nativity of Mary in the Oratory of the Conception in S. Remo, with its vague colouring and beautiful chiaroscuro; a Mater Misericordiae with chiaroscuro for the Jesuits of Buonboschetto; a Madonna at Albisola (Savona); the Addolorata at S. Margherita di Recco (Genoa); the Martyrdom of S. Secondo (after the work of the master) for Ventimiglia and a S. Nicola for the Augustinians of the same town; in Genoa eleven paintings with Saints of the Order in the sacristy of S. Nicola (a real art gallery), a Madonna in the refectory; in the church of the Madonnetta a very successful S. Agostino, a S. Famiglia by P. Piola, a Madonna among Saints; ten paintings for the Visitazione, and the disputes of S. Agostino in the councils. Alizeri also attributes to him the paintings of six Augustinian Martyrs which were in the library of S. Nicola. Ratti, on the other hand, says they are by Assereto; and he attributes the Dispute of St. Augustine to G. B Carbone.

More than the perfection of his drawing, one can notice in him a gentleness of colour which pleases and impresses.

He died in Genoa on 7th May 1698.
